Ama The word ama literally means “sea women” in Japanese. Ama were free divers that for over two thousand years provided their families and villages with fresh seafood. Wearing only a loincloth and mask, the ama braved the cold waters of the Pacific Rim to collect shellfish, octopus, sea urchin, and other delicacies from the depths. Even today, the few surviving ama dive without scuba gear or air tanks.
Ama Ama Oyster Bar & Grill We were so inspired by the ama, the connection they had to the sea, and the freshness of the foods they provided to their communities, that we named our restaurant after them…twice!
